For Peer Feedback Assignment #1, please consider the following general topics:

  • How the speaker’s verbal and nonverbal communication expanded your understanding of
    themes like language, culture, identity, meaning making and/or other course ideas.
  • How the delivery and/or design (content, organizational aspects) of the speech supported
    the speaker’s ability to deliver a powerful message, connect with the audience, and open
    up possibilities for dialogue and deliberation.

Design Topics:

  • Introduction (attention getter, audience motivation/orientation, preview)
  • Discussion of language, culture, identity, meaning-making or other course ideas
  • Incorporation of references to course readings and viewings
  • Clarity of explanations
  • Links to audience interests and values
  • Organizational pattern
  • Use of examples
  • Use of metaphors or other noteworthy language

Delivery Topics:

  • Facial expression
  • Eye contact
  • Use of the voice for emphasis
  • Strategic pauses
  • Extemporaneousness
  • Bodily gestures

Each essay should be about 500 words in length (not more than 550), typed, and double spaced.
Please address no more than four major ideas in your essay. Choose the ideas you address
carefully; your analysis will be stronger if you address meaningful aspects of your peers’ work.
Always link your observations and analysis to the speaker’s ability to achieve a particular
purpose and to a discussion of the effect speech aspects had on you as an audience member.
You must make specific, cited reference to course readings at least three times in your
evaluation essay. Your essay will be due one week after the date of the speech you evaluate.
