Immanuel Kant

German philosopher in the 1700s. His ethical theories are sometimes called “duty-based ethics”, because he believed that there are moral obligations - or duties - that apply to everyone.

An example would be the maxim “Do not lie”. The obligations are absolute and unconditional, and we have an ethical duty to abide by them.
