Mashup
A popular type of Derivative Work these days is a mashup.
Mashup
A mashup is a new product derived almost entirely from a combination of existing works. There is little or no new original content.
The originality of the mashup stems from:
- the creator’s selections from existing works and
- the novel ways in which the selections are combined.
Example
In the same way that a collage is an artwork made from an assortment of photographs, clippings, and drawings, a mashup is a new work created by combining and overlaying an assortment of existing works.
Software Mashup
A software mashup is a web application or a mobile app that uses content from more than one internet service to provide a brand new service to users.
A popular type of mashup, called a mapping mashup, takes the results from a query made to a locator service (e.g. one that finds nearby restaurants, or cheap hotels, and might find consumer reviews of those products and services) and presents its results as locations on a map.
