Activity 5 - Environmental Geology at Home: Waste & Pollution

In this activity, you will discuss a waste or pollution problem from your home country, province, state, town, or simply an area in which you are interested. The problem could be ongoing or a past issue that has been resolved.

Here are some guidelines for the discussion:

  • Give details of the problem, such as dates, location (including a map or figure would help), and who is affected.
  • Explain the issue in terms of environmental geology using what you learned in this course. What is the cause of the problem?
  • What are the environmental consequences?
  • Are there social or economic consequences? Are there statistics you can provide?
  • What measures are being used to resolve it or, in your now educated opinion, what measures should they be using?
  • What are the possible (or occurring) consequences of the measures being used?
  • Is the issue resolved or will it ever be resolved?

Formatting

  • ~1000 words (2 pages, 12 ft, single-spaced)
  • References and figures not included in word/page count
  • Must include in-text citations and reference list in APA format
  • Must incorporate scientific literature

Grading

  • Grade will be solely from the TA and Instructor
  • Use this grading rubric to guide your work
  • Worth 10% of your overall grade

In terms of learning objectives, this is what you have been working towards in this course with the activities. You now have experience understanding environmental geology concepts, writing about scientific issues, reading scientific literature, and applying knowledge gained during this course. This will all be tested in this activity.

Deadline is Monday, April 8th but you will have a grace period until Thursday, April 11 at 8 am to submit without penalty. Submit via Dropbox.

Write it on the Great Lakes area about waste management.
